MultiLing Corporation Contributes to Mother and Infant Care

A Team at MultiLing Corporation, Lead by a Mother Whose Baby Was in New Born ICU, Gives Back to the Hospital that Helped Save Her Baby’s Life

September 4, 2008 – Provo, Utah – In the spirit of good citizenship, community, and care, MultiLing Corporation is donating care kits for mothers and newborns in the New Born Intensive Care Unit at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center today.

About one year ago, Gabriela Poletti gave birth to her first child, a son named Alex. As any new mother would be, she was excited and happy to bring this new life into the world. However, the first 22 days of Alex’s life were spent in the New Born Intensive Care Unit, also known as the NICU, at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo, Utah. Alex was born with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome and respiratory distress.

Little did Gabriela know, but when she and her baby found themselves in the NICU, there were already many “graduates,” babies who had experienced similar challenges at NICU, yet were released and went on to grow healthy and happy. Their mothers, along with the NICU Coordinator, have now formed a support group for families that find themselves at the NICU. The mothers of the “graduates” also provide care packages for these families as well as a range of different activities for them to participate in, such as pizza nights and scrapbooking classes.

The care packages MultiLing has prepared contain essentials like shampoo, soap, toothbrushes, toothpaste, and lotion, as well as thank-you cards and big handkerchiefs.  The handkerchiefs are taken home by the new mothers, and are held close to their bodies while they are sleeping.  The babies in the NICU usually cannot be held due to their fragile conditions, and thus lack contact with their mothers. Therefore, the handkerchiefs are returned and placed next to the babies, which allow them to have the mothers’ smell with them. This helps the baby and mother bond together while the baby is in its fragile state and cannot be held.

After a long, stressful, and painful 22 days, Gabriela was able to take Alex home. She is pleased to report that he is a happy and healthy 20-month old, for which she gives thanks each day. Because of the support Gabriela received, she wanted to do something special for the people at NICU and this project was born. She lead the project in assembling the kits, and her other “family” at MultiLing was very supportive and helpful in donating items and putting them together.

Today, MultiLing will be delivering care packages for the families and babies who are at the NICU at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center.

“I am so thankful and blessed to be able to pay forward this service that was rendered to me and Alex,” said Gabriela Poletti, a team leader at MultiLing Corporation. “I know what a difference this made to me and my family, and I am happy that I work for a company who not only supported me throughout the birth and complications of my son, but is assisting me in doing this project. I hope that this will inspire many more people to support the families that are going through similar experiences.”
